Our field research in the apiaries is centered on projects addressing problems of major importance to Pacific Northwest (PNW) beekeepers.
Current colony health research includes:
- sustainable and integrative methods in agricultural management with emphasis in queen breeding and honey bee health
- differential sperm use by honey bee queens of different subspecies
- monitoring mating flight behavior with implications in bee breeding in the changing climate
- examining sub-lethal effects of chemical residues in the hive and the environment
- monitoring seasonal variation in Nosema ceranae infestations
- molecular characterization of Nosema species in the PNW
